There is a lot we can't control when it comes to fertility and pregnancy and hence it's even more important that we minimise the risks of the preventable issues. Our goal is to give you all the information, the most options and the best chance of falling pregnant with a healthy pregnancy. We're here to help guide you if you're worried about your fertility or if you're considering options around fertility preservation (egg or embryo freezing). If you're thinking about trying to conceive soon we recommend coming in at least six months prior for a preconception consult.
In a preconception consultation we'll cover:
- general health assessment including mental health
- comprehensive baseline bloods (including thyroid, iron stores, vitamin D, blood sugar, hormones, blood type)
- genetic carrier screening - Medicare covered blood or saliva test checking for recessive 'carriers' of at least three common genetic mutations cystic fibrosis, fragile X syndrome and spinal muscular atrophy
- egg reserve/AMH testing
- vaccination status, especially measles, rubella, chicken pox and hepatitis B
- STIs that can affect fertility
- reviewing medications and supplements to check their safety for conception, pregnancy and postpartum
- cervical screening
- folate and iodine supplementation prenatally to reduce the risk of neural tube defects causing spina bifida
- lifestyle factors for fertility and pregnancy optimisation
- fertility windows, timing of intercourse, what's normal around miscarriage, expected average time to conceive and what to do if you're not falling pregnant in that timeframe
- models of pregnancy care and options for public and private care, ensuring your private health insurance is up to date if you're planning private obstetric care.
If you're thinking about starting a family we are here to help and there's lots to cover! Book a long appointment online or via reception.
